About SFI - The Sustainable Forestry Initiative

SFI Inc. is an independent, charitable organization dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management. They work with conservation groups, local communities, resource professionals, landowners, and countless other organizations and individuals who share the passion for responsible forest management. The SFI Board of Directors represents environmental, social and economic interests equally, and address local needs through a unique grassroots network of SFI Implementation Committees.

SFI forest certification standard is based on principles that promote sustainable forest management, including measures to protect water quality, bio-diversity, wildlife habitat, species at risk, and forests with exceptional conservation value.

The SFI standard is used widely across North America, and has strong acceptance in the global marketplace to deliver a steady supply of third-party certified wood from well-managed forests. This is especially important because of the growing demand for green building and responsible paper purchasing, at a time when only 10 percent of the world’s forests are certified. When consumers see the SFI label on a product, they can be confident they are buying or using paper from responsible sources.  Return to main Go Green page

About PEFC - The Programme For The Endorsement Of Forest Certification Schemes

PEFC is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests. PEFC is a global umbrella organization for the assessment of and mutual recognition of national forest certification schemes developed in a multi-stakeholder process. These national schemes build upon the inter-governmental processes for the promotion of sustainable forest management, a series of on-going mechanisms supported by 149 governments in the world covering 85% of the world's forest area.

Total PEFC membership is 35 independent national forest certification systems of which 25 to date have been through a rigorous assessment process involving public consultation and the use of independent assessors to provide the assessments on which mutual recognition decisions are taken by the membership. These 25 systems account for more than 200 million hectares of certified forests (one hectare equals 2.47 acres of forest) producing millions of tons of certified timber to the market place making PEFC the world's largest certification system. The PEFC goal is to assure that the world's forests are managed sustainably and that their functions are protected for present and future generations. Return to main Go Green page

SOY Inks - Good For The Printing Industry, Good For The Environment

Research has found that soy ink is removed more effectively from paper than petroleum ink during de-inking process in recycling, resulting in less paper fiber damage and a brighter paper. In addition, the waste is not considered hazardous and can be treated more easily, completely and cost-effectively. Residue waste ink is considered a liquid industrial waste that requires proper disposal.

Soybean oil’s clarity allows pigments to reach their full potential, resulting in deep, rich bright colors. Soy ink delivers a high quality print with lower rub-off and greater rub resistance. When you use a product with soy ink in a copy machine, once the ink is exposed to the heat, the boiling point of soy ink is lower, so there is less chance of the ink being transferred to the machine parts instead of the paper. Soy inks offer better stability and higher quality it maintains its lithographic stability throughout the entire print run, so press operators makes fewer color adjustments during production thus rejecting fewer copies. This results in less paper waste, and higher overall print quality. Return to main Go Green page
